Sami Zayn Championship Celebration

Nick Aldis: Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to SmackDown live from Corpus Christi, Texas. Now, folks, sometimes in my job, you have to deal with people who just rub you the wrong way. But you dig deep, you put a smile on your face, and you be professional. And with that in mind, per his never ending, over the top request, allow me to introduce to you, the new WWE Champion, Sami Zayn.

Sami Zayn: Wow. Is that funny to you, Nick? That’s funny, them booing me like that? Hey, we’re gonna address that in one second, alright. I’m gonna get to you next. I know how much it must’ve hurt you to do that warm, yet slightly disingenuous introduction. It must kill you to say out loud, doesn’t it, Nick? Undisputed WWE Champion, Sami Zayn. Well, it sure feels good coming out of my mouth. And here’s the thing, I got to be honest, I’m a little surprised at the reaction here in Corpus Christi, tonight. I mean what I say, I say what I mean. When I said, Justice For Sami was never just about me, I meant it. Justice For Sami was about Justice For All. Even the ones booing right now, whether you realize this or not, I fight for you. This is justice for you, do you understand?

This is a symbol of hope and perseverance for millions of people around the world. And I’m sorry, if you don’t get that, one day, maybe you will. But justice has been served and this, right here, is what it looks like. I get it, I get it, you’re not used to actually having a champion with a strong sense of morality, but guess what? And Nick, this pertains to you, this is something you should understand, because justice is not the sole core tenant of my moral belief system, I also believe very strongly in equality. Equality, which means, when you have all these other top WWE Superstars knocking on your door, asking for championship opportunities, I expect you to treat them equally with the way you treated me. The way you put obstacle after obstacle. The way you constantly stepped in my way. You did everything you could to block me. I expect equality.

– Johnny Gargano comes down to the ring with Candice LeRae. Johnny hugs Sami.

Sami Zayn: Johnny Wrestling, ladies and gentlemen. Hey Johnny, listen, I got to tell you, from the bottom of my heart, I could not have been out here celebrating this championship without the two of you, it means the world to me. Thank you.

Johnny Gargano: Sami, we wouldn’t miss it for the world. But there is one other reason why we’re out here. If you remember, last week, we had a deal. If we come out there and help you with Punk, and you become WWE Champion, I’m first in line for a title shot, and I’m out here to collect.

Sami Zayn: Johnny, I don’t want to split hairs here with you, but we never made a deal. You said, you said you were first in line. Hang on just a damn second, hang on.

Johnny Gargano: Sami! You made a promise to me.

Sami Zayn: Johnny, all I said is I would take care of you, and I will take care of you.

Johnny Gargano: Okay, you’ll take care of me? Then take care of me then. You’re out here, I’m out here, you’re the champion, I’m first in line. So, how about Sami Zayn versus Johnny Gargano for the WWE Championship, tonight in Corpus Christi?

Nick Aldis: Woah, okay. Look, Johnny, I don’t know what’s going on between you two, that’s none of my concern, but the fact of the matter is he might be the champion, but he doesn’t make championship matches, I do.

Sami Zayn: That’s what I was trying to tell you, Johnny, that’s what I was trying to tell you. It’s not totally up to me, I have to deal with him, do you understand?

Nick Aldis: And to be quite honest, Johnny, you had a championship match, a couple weeks ago in your hometown. Now, as far as I’m concerned, the man I considered to be next in line is actually not here tonight, and that man is CM Punk.

– Kevin Owens walks down to the ring.

Kevin Owens: Nick, if we’re talking about people who deserve title chances, I think you’re looking at someone.

Candice LeRae: No, no, no, no, no no no, I know what you’re trying to do, Kevin. Johnny is next in line, okay? No, no, no, he said that.

Kevin Owens: Excuse me a minute.

Owens drops Gargano with The Stunner.

Sami Zayn: Hey, Nick.

Kevin Owens: As I was saying.

Nick Aldis: Okay, hold on. I know what you’re gonna say, alright, I’m gonna tell you the same thing I told him. He doesn’t make championship matches, you don’t make championship matches, I do. And after what you did last week, I’m sorry, I can’t reward behavior, it’s just the way it is.

Kevin Owens: What? You don’t reward bad behavior, are you high?

Sami Zayn: We don’t reward bad behavior, Kev.

Kevin Owens: This idiot. Hey, Nick, this idiot screwed up how many SmackDown main events over the last few weeks to get that title match last week? 3-4 maybe even, correct? Yeah, you remember the Triple Threat, GUNTHER, myself, Finn Balor? The Triple Match went to a No Contest somehow, because of that idiot, right there.

Nick Aldis: That’s also true.

Kevin Owens: And let’s not forget, this whole messed started when he cost me the WWE Title, in my match, in Toronto.

Nick Aldis: That’s true, again.

Kevin Owens: Not to mention the fact that he’s an arrogant jackass.

Nick Aldis: Well, I can’t argue with that one. And to be quite frank with you, yes, that has got me thinking.

Sami Zayn: Hey, Nick, there’s nothing to think about here, what the hell are you trying to do? You don’t think I see what’s going on here? You don’t think I see it? I know what you did to me last time. The last time I won the WWE Championship, you threw CM Punk at me in the last minute, is that what you think is going on here, Nick? Because I’m telling you right now, I’m the champion, and I’m not having that again, do you understand?

Nick Aldis: Understand this, get your hands off me, now. Maybe I have to say this for the third time, you don’t make matches, he doesn’t make matches, I make the matches. And you know, I was really on the fence about this whole thing, but then you just made this decision really easy for me, champ. So, lace them up real tight, because you’re defending the WWE Championship against Kevin Owens, tonight in Corpus Christi. Oh, champ, that last reign was 9 days, let’s see if we get past 7.

Sami tries to plead his case with Nick Aldis on the outside. Randy Orton makes his entrance for the upcoming Men’s MITB Qualifier. Randy tells Sami to keep the WWE Championship warm for him to close this segment.

– Johnny Gargano and Candice LeRae are bickering in the back. Candice told Johnny before that he was gonna end up disappointed. Sami Zayn joins the conversation. Sami throws a massive hissy fit about upper management trying to take the WWE Championship away from him. It was crappy for Nick Aldis to say that Johnny Gargano is not in the list of contenders for the WWE Championship. Sami believes that Johnny deserves a title shot. Sami apologizes for the miscommunication. He’ll do whatever he can to get Johnny that title shot, but he can’t lose the title in 7 days, he can’t go through that again. If Sami’s no longer champion, Johnny will never get another opportunity at the WWE Championship. Johnny understands where Sami is coming from. Sami tells Johnny that he appreciates him and they’ll talk later.

Alexa says that she needs to focus on doing whatever she can to win tonight. Tatum says that this is a great opportunity for her and Charlotte to grow their bond, they already have a pinfall victory over Fatal Influence, they can capture championship gold. – Cathy Kelley had a backstage interview with Kevin Owens. Tonight is a big night, not just because of the title match, but because where they are. This arena is where Kevin had his first official WWE match against John Cena. You know what happened that night? Kevin Owens beat John Cena on his first night. The stars are aligning perfectly tonight, because in the same arena where he beat John Cena in his debut match, he beats Sami Zayn to become WWE Champion. Finn Balor joins the conversation. Finn passive aggressively says that it’s good the stars are aligning for somebody on the roster. Finn finds it very convenient that Kevin is getting the first crack at the WWE Championship, especially after he help him win last week. To each their own, Kevin can do things his way, Finn will do things the right way. Whoever wins tonight, Finn is coming after the WWE Championship, even if that means he has to win the Money In The Bank Briefcase. Finn wishes Kevin good luck and walks away.

– WWE Radio will be moving to Sirius XM Channel 93 starting on October 1st.

– We see Nick Aldis talking to Chelsea Green and Tiffany Stratton. Nick says congratulations to Chelsea for having her first successful title defense last week. They’ve been through a lot, but Chelsea proved why she deserves to be the WWE Women’s Champion. Chelsea was about to give Tiffany credit for her victory last week. Danhausen pops out of Nick’s office. Danhausen says that GUNTHER is pissed, and he wants to talk about Money In The Bank. Why does Danhausen have Nick’s phone? Danhausen says that somebody named Mickie keeps calling and sounds very angry, but don’t worry, Danhausen blocked the number. Tiffany informs Chelsea that she’ll be competing in one of the upcoming Women’s MITB Qualifying Matches. Chelsea has no problem with that, they both can be champions. Chelsea and Tiffany run into Nikki Bella. Nikki saw Chelsea’s appearance on Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen last night. Nikki tells Chelsea to keep her name out of her mouth. Nikki knows that Chelsea was busy last week barely eking out a victory over Nia Jax, but she had time to see what Nikki did to Paige. Nikki says that she’s coming for the WWE Women’s Championship. And unlike, Tiffany, Nikki doesn’t need qualifying matches to get those title opportunities. Nikki is a legend, an icon, she’s Nikki Bella and she’s coming after that WWE Women’s Championship, you got that?

Michael Cole Sit-Down Interview With Cody Rhodes

Michael Cole: Cody, thank you for joining me. It’s become a pattern. We all just saw what happened at Sunday Night’s Main Event. You weren’t able to pull the trigger on someone you care about, what happened?

Cody Rhodes: You’re not wrong. I don’t know if I love the phrasing, couldn’t pull the trigger, but I can cite mercy, sure, I’ve heard that, but that’s an excuse, and I’m not here to do that, I don’t want to give you any excuses.

Michael Cole: I’ve called you, QB1. There are a lot of people in the company that refer to you as QB1. I’m proud we have someone like you that represents WWE. The problem is, it seems like there’s no longer a team, the players are gone. Remember at WrestleMania XL, when you finally finished the story, and the ring filled up with a lot of people, you were on people’s shoulders, celebrating? If you take a look back at that picture, all of those people have stabbed you in the back. And it seems that would come with the territory as the champion, right?

Cody Rhodes: Maybe I should’ve seen it coming? I mean, a lifetime growing up in this industry, maybe I should’ve beat them to the punch. But whether that’s Sami Zayn, The Greatest Of All-Time John Cena, Kevin Owens or Randy Orton, everybody including myself gets a bit seduced by the biggest title in the game. Maybe I’m arrogant or naive thinking that, with me as champion, it would have gone differently, it did not. But I appreciate, and in a way almost disagree with that’s not the end of QB1, because that’s not the only team. You know, you’re the voice of WWE, it’s a very large team, it’s not just the gentlemen fighting over the WWE Championship.

Michael Cole: You know what’s gonna happen again, right? You’re gonna be in the ring with Randy Orton. And Cody, when you look in his eyes, and you’re standing just a few feet away from him, what are you going to do?

Cody Rhodes: You know what I’m not immune to, Michael? Is every week, every week, whether it’s in the locker room, whether it’s in the arena, whether it’s online, the discussion about my morality. Will he? Won’t he? Is there a different path? Is there a darker path? Is he gonna turn into that direction? Let me ask you, do you know something, does anyone know something that I don’t know? Because all this success that I’ve had, beyond my wildest dreams has been me. This guy sitting right here, the guy who came back at WrestleMania 38, I had experimented and disrupted in the pro wrestling and sports entertainment space more than anyone besides Mr. Heyman. I knew who I was. And I was uncompromised. And uncompromised got me back-to-back Royal Rumble wins. Uncompromised got me two victories over Brock Lesnar, who can say that? Uncompromised got me to defeat a champion who hadn’t been beat in four years. And then we go to SummerSlam, against the greatest of all-time, my mentor, John Cena, and I didn’t ask for the torch, I took it. And then this year at WrestleMania, I defeated Randy Orton no matter how I looked when I walked out of there. So, I’m amused of the fact that I need to change. But credit to your question, that situation is gonna come up again, and when it does, I’m not gonna make the same decision I made at Sunday Night’s Main Event.

Michael Cole: Thank you, Cody.

Cody Rhodes: Thank you.

Damian Priest Promo

A lot of you are asking, why did I do Truth like that? Well, what you should be asking is, what took so long? Because we were Tag Team Champions for six months, and you, Truth, were giving out title shot after title shot, and I had to win those matches for us. Instead of laughing, I should’ve been focused. Instead of bitching about change, I should’ve looked in the mirror and said, you need to change. After we lost the titles, I tried to move on. I tried to explain to you why this needed to be over and you failed, again. Then I had to explain to you the only way I know how. And you know what, I don’t think you get it yet, but you will. You want to call me a villain? Truth, you want to call me a backstabber? Fine, but make sure you call me a bad man.
