Foreword / Author’s Note
By Joshua Lopez
Pop culture has a strange way of arriving in our lives exactly when we need it.
For some people it’s music.
For others it’s sports.
For me, unexpectedly, it was a reality show about a group of messy, ambitious, and deeply flawed people working at a restaurant in West Hollywood.
Vanderpump Rules was never supposed to mean anything to me beyond entertainment. When it premiered on Bravo in 2013, it looked like another chaotic entry in the growing world of reality television—young people chasing fame, navigating relationships, and arguing over cocktails.
But like many great reality shows, the chaos hid something deeper:
friendships, betrayals, growth, ego, heartbreak, and reinvention.
For years I watched the show casually. I knew the characters. I knew the dynamics. But I never imagined it would eventually intersect with my own life in a meaningful way.
Then came the scandal.
In early 2023, the world of reality television experienced something rare: a cultural explosion that spilled far outside the usual Bravo fanbase. When the affair between Tom Sandoval and Rachel Leviss was revealed while he was still in a nearly decade-long relationship with Ariana Madix, it ignited a media firestorm.
Fans called it “Scandoval.”
And suddenly a reality TV storyline became something bigger.
It became a national conversation about loyalty, deception, forgiveness, and the strange way modern relationships unfold under the microscope of television and social media.
For millions of viewers, it was shocking.
For me, it was something else entirely.
Because on the same day the story exploded across headlines and timelines…
my own life quietly fell apart.
I lost my job.
Professionally, I felt like the ground beneath me had disappeared. Anyone who has experienced sudden career uncertainty knows the feeling: the confusion, the anxiety, the quiet fear about what comes next.
It’s a strange kind of grief.
The loss of routine.
The loss of stability.
The loss of direction.
At that moment, I didn’t know where my professional life was headed. What I did know was that I had always loved storytelling.
I had spent years writing about professional wrestling, covering the drama and spectacle of that world for readers who cared deeply about it. Storytelling, commentary, and cultural analysis had always been my outlet.
And suddenly, there was this enormous cultural story unfolding in real time.
Not a scripted drama.
But something strangely close to one.
The more I followed the fallout of the affair, the more I realized something fascinating: Scandoval wasn’t just gossip.
It was a story about human behavior.
About how friendships fracture.
About how public judgment can become overwhelming.
About how people rebuild their lives after catastrophic mistakes.
About how someone like Ariana Madix could transform heartbreak into opportunity and emerge stronger than ever.
And so, almost without realizing it, I began writing again.
At first it was simply observation—notes, thoughts, reflections about the way this scandal was unfolding across television, podcasts, interviews, and social media.
But over time those notes turned into something more structured.
A narrative.
A cultural document of a moment that reality television may never replicate again.
Because Scandoval wasn’t just an affair.
It was a perfect storm:
- A decade-long relationship collapsing.
- A friend group fracturing.
- A reality show forced to confront real life in real time.
- And millions of viewers emotionally investing themselves in the fallout.
And somewhere in the middle of all of it, I found something I hadn’t expected:
purpose.
Writing about this story reminded me why I loved storytelling in the first place.
It reminded me that pop culture, even something as chaotic as reality television, can still reveal genuine truths about human nature.
And it gave me a new direction when I needed one most.
This book is not meant to be a courtroom.
It is not here to declare heroes and villains.
Instead, it’s an attempt to examine the full story—the mistakes, the heartbreak, the backlash, and the aftermath.
Because the truth about Scandoval is complicated.
And complicated stories are often the most interesting ones to tell.
Chapter One
The Affair That Broke Reality Television
In the world of reality television, scandals are nothing new.
Arguments are expected.
Breakups are inevitable.
Friendships implode and reform almost every season.
But every once in a while, something happens that feels bigger than the show itself.
Something that escapes the boundaries of reality television and becomes a full-blown cultural event.
That moment arrived in March 2023.
For nearly a decade, Tom Sandoval and Ariana Madix had been one of the most stable couples on Vanderpump Rules.
Their relationship wasn’t perfect—no relationship ever is—but compared to the chaos surrounding many of their castmates over the years, they appeared steady. Loyal. United.
Fans had watched them build a life together.
They bought a home.
They built businesses.
They navigated fame and criticism together.
So when news broke that Sandoval had been carrying on a months-long secret affair with Ariana’s close friend, Rachel Leviss, the reaction was immediate and explosive.
The scandal spread across the internet in hours.
Entertainment news outlets scrambled to confirm details.
Social media erupted.
Suddenly people who had never watched a single episode of the show were asking the same question:
“What the hell is Scandoval?”
For longtime fans, the betrayal felt deeply personal.
This wasn’t just cheating.
It was cheating with someone who had been welcomed into the group.
Someone Ariana had defended.
Someone who had spent time in their home.
And as more details emerged, the story became even more surreal.
Hidden relationships.
Late-night phone calls.
Secret meetings while filming the show.
Moments that had been captured on camera but whose true meaning only became clear after the affair was revealed.
Reality television had always blurred the line between performance and authenticity.
But Scandoval shattered it completely.
Suddenly viewers were re-examining entire seasons of the show through a new lens.
Every conversation.
Every glance.
Every unexplained tension between cast members.
It was like discovering a hidden storyline running beneath the surface of everything fans had already watched.
But the most remarkable part of the story wasn’t the betrayal itself.
It was the aftermath.
Within days, Ariana Madix transformed from reality television personality into something much larger: a cultural symbol of resilience.
Brands lined up to work with her.
Fans rallied behind her.
Opportunities poured in—from national commercials to new television appearances.
The woman who had been publicly humiliated by the scandal suddenly became the central figure in one of the most dramatic career reinventions reality television had ever seen.
Meanwhile, the backlash against Tom Sandoval was swift and brutal.
Businesses connected to him faced protests.
Social media turned vicious.
The public narrative became almost cartoonishly simple:
Hero.
Villain.
Victim.
But real life is rarely that simple.
And that’s where this story becomes more complicated.
Because beneath the headlines, the memes, and the endless commentary, there were still real people trying to navigate the wreckage of their choices.
And for me, watching it unfold during one of the most uncertain periods of my own life, it became something unexpectedly powerful.
A story about downfall.
And what comes after.
Chapter Two
The Secret That Was Hiding in Plain Sight
Long before the word Scandoval existed, the secret had already begun.
Affairs rarely begin with a single dramatic moment. More often, they grow slowly—through proximity, shared frustrations, and emotional intimacy that quietly crosses boundaries long before anyone acknowledges it.
That’s what appears to have happened between Tom Sandoval and Rachel Leviss.
When viewers first met Rachel—then known publicly as Raquel Leviss—she entered the world of Vanderpump Rules through her relationship with James Kennedy. At the time, she appeared almost out of place in the chaotic social ecosystem of the show. Soft-spoken, polite, and often overwhelmed by the explosive personalities around her, she seemed like someone still trying to figure out where she belonged.
Her relationship with James, however, was far from stable.
Over the years viewers watched their dynamic deteriorate through arguments, accusations, and the strain of filming a reality television show where every personal conflict becomes public entertainment.
When their engagement ended, Rachel found herself in a strange position.
She was single.
Still part of the cast.
And suddenly navigating friendships that had originally formed around her relationship with James.
Meanwhile, Tom Sandoval occupied a completely different role within the group.
He was one of the original cast members—someone who had helped define the identity of the show from its earliest seasons. Alongside his longtime partner Ariana Madix, he had built a reputation as part of one of the more stable couples within the group.
But stability on reality television often hides complicated private dynamics.
Sandoval and Ariana had been together for nearly a decade. They shared a home, a life, and multiple business ventures. Yet by the time Season 10 began filming, subtle signs of distance had started to appear.
Arguments about intimacy.
Conflicts about priorities.
The quiet emotional fatigue that sometimes develops after years in the public eye.
In hindsight, many fans would later revisit these moments searching for clues.
But at the time, they were just another set of relationship struggles playing out on television.
What happened next unfolded mostly outside the cameras.
According to Rachel’s later account, the relationship between her and Sandoval developed during a period when she was emotionally vulnerable.
On her podcast Rachel Goes Rogue, she described feeling lost in the months following her breakup with James and struggling with anxiety, alcohol use, and the pressures of filming reality television.
“I had become the worst version of myself,” she said while reflecting on the months leading up to the affair. “Through the secrecy and deception and going along with these lies… it ate me up.”
But before that guilt surfaced, there was connection.
Rachel described long conversations between the two—late-night phone calls, FaceTime conversations that stretched across hours, and quiet moments away from the chaos of filming where they could talk openly about their frustrations with the show and the pressures of living life on camera.
For someone who felt misunderstood by the rest of the cast, Sandoval appeared to offer something important.
Validation.
“He made me feel seen,” she said. “He made me feel heard.”
They bonded over the strange experience of being reality television personalities—something few people outside the cast could truly understand.
Producers capture hours of footage.
Scenes are edited into narratives.
Conflicts are amplified.
And suddenly personal relationships become public entertainment for millions of viewers.
That environment creates an intimacy between cast members that outsiders often struggle to comprehend.
They are coworkers.
Friends.
Storylines.
And sometimes rivals.
In that environment, emotional boundaries can blur quickly.
Rachel later admitted that she began placing Sandoval on a pedestal.
“I looked up to him in a way,” she explained. “He validated me… I felt adored and admired.”
That validation came at a moment when she felt particularly fragile.
The end of her engagement to James had shaken her confidence. Watching him quickly move on with a new girlfriend—while they continued filming scenes together—created an emotional whiplash that she described as deeply painful.
“I was grieving that relationship,” she said. “And I knew I wasn’t ready for another committed relationship.”
Yet the connection with Sandoval continued to deepen.
At first, she said, it felt like emotional support.
Then it became something more complicated.
And eventually it crossed a line neither of them could easily uncross.
The affair remained secret for months.
According to Rachel’s later recounting, Sandoval repeatedly told her he intended to end his relationship with Ariana. He described the relationship as struggling and claimed they were already moving toward separation.
“I believed him,” she said.
She also admitted that if she could revisit that moment now, she would have made a different decision.
“If I could go back,” she said, “I would have put my foot down and walked away.”
But hindsight is a luxury rarely available in the moment.
What made the situation even more complicated was that Rachel maintained a friendship with Ariana during this time.
One moment in particular would later become infamous among viewers.
During Season 10, Rachel had a conversation with Ariana about her relationship with Sandoval, even asking questions about their intimacy. At the time it appeared to be a normal, if slightly awkward, conversation between friends.
Later, knowing what was happening behind the scenes, it felt almost surreal.
Rachel herself would later acknowledge how disturbing the moment looked in retrospect.
“I see what it looks like,” she admitted on her podcast.
But she also explained that part of the reason for the conversation was confusion.
Sandoval had been telling her that his relationship with Ariana was essentially over—that they were no longer intimate and were living more like roommates than partners.
Rachel wanted to know if that was true.
“I was trying to feel that out,” she said.
What she didn’t realize at the time was how dramatically the truth would eventually explode into public view.
Because affairs often exist in a strange bubble.
Inside that bubble, people convince themselves that the outside world will never find out—or that when it does, the story will somehow make sense.
But reality television removes the protective walls most secrets rely on.
Cameras are always present.
Friends are constantly interacting.
And eventually, the truth surfaces.
When it did, the fallout would become one of the most explosive moments reality television had ever experienced.
But before the scandal reached the public, before the headlines and the social media fury, there was a quieter period where the relationship existed in a kind of suspended reality.
Rachel would later describe it as something that felt real in the moment.
But also something built partly on fantasy.
“It felt real,” she said. “But looking back now… it was falling in love with a future version of him.”
A version where he had already left Ariana.
A version where their relationship could exist openly.
A version that never actually arrived.
Because when the secret finally came out, the world that fantasy depended on collapsed instantly.
And nothing about their lives—or the show—would ever be the same again.
Chapter Three
The Night Everything Broke
Every long-running secret has a moment where the illusion collapses.
For nearly seven months, the relationship between Tom Sandoval and Rachel Leviss had existed in a strange in-between space—hidden from the public, concealed from their friends, and protected by the fragile assumption that it would somehow stay buried.
But secrets inside a friend group rarely survive forever.
Especially inside the ecosystem of Vanderpump Rules.
The truth came out on the night of March 1, 2023.
In many ways, the circumstances surrounding the discovery felt almost cinematic. Sandoval was performing with his band, Tom Sandoval & The Most Extras, at a show in Los Angeles. For years, music had been one of his creative escapes from the pressures of reality television and restaurant ownership. That night looked like any other performance—fans, cameras, drinks, and the comfortable chaos of a reality star living a life that was half public spectacle and half personal routine.
Somewhere in the middle of that night, Ariana Madix picked up Sandoval’s phone.
What she found was a screen recording of an intimate FaceTime conversation between Sandoval and Rachel.
The moment shattered everything.
For nearly a decade Ariana and Sandoval had built a life together. They shared a home, businesses, and a partnership that—at least publicly—appeared to be one of the most stable relationships on the show. Their relationship had survived countless cast feuds, career changes, and the unique pressures that come with living your life on camera.
In that moment, all of it collapsed.
Accounts from people close to the cast say Ariana immediately confronted Sandoval after discovering the video. The conversation was explosive, emotional, and deeply painful. Within hours the news began spreading through their tight-knit group of friends.
First came the phone calls.
Then the texts.
Then the disbelief.
For many members of the cast, the shock wasn’t just about the affair itself—it was about who it involved. Rachel had been part of their circle for years. She had spent time with Ariana. She had been welcomed into group events, vacations, and private conversations.
And now the truth revealed that, during much of that time, the relationship between her and Sandoval had been happening in secret.
By the next morning the story had already begun leaking to the press.
Within twenty-four hours the internet had a new word:
Scandoval.
It spread across social media like wildfire.
Clips from the show resurfaced online. Fans began rewatching Season 10 episodes searching for clues they might have missed. Moments that had once seemed harmless suddenly took on darker meanings. Every interaction between Sandoval and Rachel was scrutinized in slow motion.
Reality television had produced scandals before.
But this one felt different.
Part of the reason was the emotional investment viewers had developed over the years. Unlike many reality shows where casts change constantly, Vanderpump Rules had followed the same group of friends for more than a decade. Fans had watched them grow up, fall in love, break apart, and rebuild their lives.
The betrayal felt personal to people who had spent years watching Ariana and Sandoval together.
The public response was immediate and overwhelming.
Social media flooded with messages supporting Ariana. Brands and celebrities began publicly aligning themselves with her. Within days she had become something rare in the chaotic world of internet discourse: a nearly unanimous public favorite.
Sandoval, meanwhile, became the central villain in a narrative that seemed to grow more intense with every passing day.
Criticism poured in from everywhere—fans, fellow reality stars, media commentators, and even some members of his own cast.
Rachel faced a similar wave of backlash.
For someone who had already described herself as emotionally fragile during that period of her life, the intensity of the reaction was almost impossible to process. The internet doesn’t operate with much patience for nuance, and the story quickly hardened into a simple narrative of heroes and villains.
But behind the headlines and viral hashtags, the people involved were still trying to process what had happened in real time.
Ariana suddenly found herself at the center of a media storm she had never asked for.
Sandoval was watching his reputation collapse almost overnight.
Rachel disappeared from public view entirely.
And the cast of Vanderpump Rules—many of whom had been personally hurt by the deception—were left trying to figure out what came next.
Production cameras returned almost immediately.
Bravo understood the gravity of what had just happened. The final episodes of Season 10 were reshaped to capture the aftermath of the revelation. Scenes were filmed with raw emotional intensity as cast members confronted Sandoval and tried to understand how the situation had unfolded without anyone realizing the truth.
The reunion episode that followed would become one of the most watched and emotionally charged reunions in reality television history.
But in the earliest hours after the discovery, none of that had happened yet.
There was no cultural moment.
No television spectacle.
Just a group of people trying to understand how one secret had detonated an entire world.
For Ariana, it meant the end of a nearly ten-year relationship.
For Sandoval, it marked the beginning of a public backlash unlike anything he had ever experienced.
And for Rachel, it set the stage for a period of reflection that would eventually lead her to step away from the show entirely and seek treatment for her mental health.
The fallout from that night would reshape not just the future of Vanderpump Rules, but the lives of everyone involved.
Because the truth about scandals—especially ones that unfold in public—is that the moment of exposure is only the beginning.
The real story is what happens after everything breaks.
Chapter Four
The Internet Trial
When the story broke, it didn’t unfold quietly.
It exploded.
Within hours, what began as a private betrayal between three people became a global spectacle. The moment the news spread that Tom Sandoval had carried on a secret affair with Rachel Leviss while still in a nearly decade-long relationship with Ariana Madix, the internet did what the internet does best: it chose sides.
The scandal had everything a modern audience craves. A beloved couple. A shocking betrayal. A close friend caught in the middle. A hidden relationship that had unfolded in plain sight on television for months without anyone realizing it.
And perhaps most importantly, it happened inside the strange ecosystem of reality television, where the audience doesn’t just watch the story—they participate in it.
By the end of the first weekend, the word Scandoval had become unavoidable.
It trended across every platform. TikTok creators dissected old scenes frame by frame. Reddit threads grew into sprawling investigations. Podcasts released emergency episodes. Bravo fans turned into amateur detectives, examining every interaction from the most recent season of Vanderpump Rules with the kind of scrutiny usually reserved for true-crime documentaries.
Clips resurfaced that suddenly looked different in hindsight. Moments that once seemed harmless now felt loaded with subtext. A glance across the room. A strange joke. An awkward silence.
What had once been dismissed as the usual reality-TV chaos now appeared to be something else entirely: a secret hiding in plain sight.
But as the internet pieced together the timeline, something else happened.
The story stopped being complicated.
It became simple.
Too simple.
The Rise of Team Ariana
In the early days of the scandal, the public response was almost unanimous.
Ariana became the hero of the story.
And to many viewers, she deserved to be.
For years, she had been one of the most emotionally grounded figures on the show. She often resisted the manufactured drama that fueled the series and was open about her struggles with depression and insecurity. Her relationship with Sandoval had been presented as one of the few stable partnerships within the cast—a contrast to the chaos that defined so many of their friends.
So when the betrayal became public, the emotional reaction from fans was immediate and visceral.
Viewers weren’t just watching a breakup.
They felt like they were watching a betrayal of someone they knew.
Within days, social media rallied behind Ariana with a level of support rarely seen for a reality television figure. The phrase “Team Ariana” became a kind of digital banner. Brands reached out to her publicly. Restaurants sent free meals. Companies rushed to collaborate with her.
Her cocktail book sales surged. Appearances were booked. Endorsements followed.
It was as if the entertainment industry itself had collectively decided that Ariana deserved compensation for the humiliation she had endured.
But the internet’s support, while sincere, carried an undertone that is common in the modern age of viral outrage.
When someone is crowned a hero online, someone else must become the villain.
The Villain of the Story
For Sandoval, the shift in public perception was immediate and brutal.
Before the scandal, he had long been seen as one of the most charismatic personalities on the show. Dramatic, theatrical, occasionally self-absorbed—but ultimately entertaining. His flair for grand gestures and elaborate costumes had become part of the identity of Vanderpump Rules.
After the scandal, that same personality trait was reinterpreted as narcissism.
Every old clip seemed to confirm the new narrative. Every dramatic moment from previous seasons was reframed as evidence that he had always been selfish, manipulative, or performative.
In the court of public opinion, the verdict had already been reached.
Tom Sandoval wasn’t just someone who had made a terrible mistake.
He became something closer to a cultural symbol—the embodiment of betrayal itself.
The backlash quickly moved beyond criticism.
Fans flooded his social media accounts with thousands of messages. Some were angry but measured. Others were cruel. Some crossed into territory that felt less like accountability and more like punishment.
At one point, protesters even appeared outside the restaurant he co-owned with his longtime friend Tom Schwartz.
It was no longer just a scandal.
It had become a spectacle.
Reality TV and Moral Theater
Part of what made the reaction so intense was the way reality television blurs the line between entertainment and morality.
Shows like Vanderpump Rules invite viewers into the lives of the cast for years. Audiences watch friendships form, relationships develop, and personal struggles unfold in real time. Over time, the cast begins to feel less like television personalities and more like extended acquaintances.
But there is a danger in that kind of intimacy.
When viewers feel personally connected to the people on screen, their reactions can become deeply emotional—and sometimes deeply unforgiving.
In many ways, the scandal turned the audience into a kind of digital jury. Millions of viewers debated the details of the affair as if they were personally affected by it.
Who knew first?
Who lied?
Who enabled the deception?
These questions dominated discussion boards and podcasts for weeks.
But amid the outrage, something more complicated began to emerge.
A few voices started asking uncomfortable questions.
Not questions about whether the affair was wrong—it clearly was—but about whether the public reaction had begun to spiral beyond proportion.
One of the cast members who addressed this directly was Lala Kent.
During the heated months that followed the scandal, she offered a perspective that cut through the noise with blunt honesty.
“He didn’t kill anybody,” she said.
It was a simple sentence.
But it carried weight.
The Punishment
In the weeks that followed, Sandoval faced a level of public backlash that few reality television figures had ever experienced.
Businesses distanced themselves. Appearances were canceled. Social media turned into a constant stream of criticism. Every public outing seemed to invite another wave of commentary.
Even his music performances—part of a side project he had pursued long before the scandal—became controversial events.
Some fans attended simply to mock him.
Others came out of curiosity, wanting to see how someone could perform under that kind of scrutiny.
The internet watched it all.
And the internet commented on all of it.
For Sandoval, the experience seemed to become something deeper than a professional crisis. It appeared to evolve into something closer to a personal reckoning.
The man who had once thrived on attention suddenly found himself at the center of a kind of public shaming ritual.
Meanwhile, Ariana’s life was moving in the opposite direction.
A Different Kind of Story
While Sandoval struggled under the weight of the backlash, Ariana began experiencing a remarkable professional resurgence.
Brands reached out. Television opportunities emerged. Appearances multiplied.
What had begun as a devastating personal betrayal gradually transformed into an unexpected career renaissance.
The contrast between their two trajectories—the rise of one and the fall of the other—became one of the most compelling elements of the story.
It also raised a deeper question.
Was the scandal simply about betrayal?
Or had it become something larger—a cultural moment that reflected how modern audiences process outrage, loyalty, and forgiveness?
As the cast prepared to return for another season of Vanderpump Rules, it was clear that the scandal was far from over.
If anything, the hardest conversations were still ahead.
Because eventually, the cameras would turn back on.
And when they did, everyone involved would have to face each other again.
Chapter Five
Collateral Damage
When a scandal like this erupts, the damage rarely stays contained between the people at the center of it.
Relationships ripple outward.
Friendships crack under pressure.
People who had nothing to do with the original betrayal suddenly find themselves forced to choose sides in a conflict they never asked to be part of.
That’s exactly what happened within the friend group surrounding Vanderpump Rules.
And perhaps no one embodied that complicated emotional crossfire more than Scheana Shay.
For years, Scheana had maintained relationships with nearly everyone involved in the scandal. She had a complicated but real friendship with Ariana Madix. She had long-standing ties to Tom Sandoval. And, at one point, she had even tried to mentor and support Rachel Leviss.
Scheana had been there when Rachel was navigating her breakup with James Kennedy. She had defended her in conversations with the rest of the group. She had tried, in her own way, to help Rachel find her footing in the chaotic world of the show.
Which made what happened next feel almost surreal.
The Night Everything Broke
When the affair between Sandoval and Rachel became public, the news hit the cast like a shockwave.
No one had been prepared for it.
According to several cast accounts, Scheana was among the first to hear the details. She had been close to Ariana for years, and when the truth emerged, her reaction was immediate and emotional.
What followed has been debated endlessly online, dissected in interviews, and argued about across social media.
Rachel claimed that Scheana physically assaulted her after learning about the affair.
Scheana denied it.
But the fallout was immediate.
Rachel filed for a temporary restraining order against Scheana, accusing her of physical aggression during the confrontation.
Suddenly, the scandal had expanded beyond the affair itself.
Now there was a legal component.
For the cast of Vanderpump Rules, who were preparing to film the Season 10 reunion, the situation created an almost impossible logistical nightmare.
Two cast members who were supposed to appear on stage together were now legally required to stay a specific distance apart.
The production had to get creative.
Rachel appeared at the reunion remotely.
Scheana sat on stage with the rest of the cast, emotionally exhausted, defending herself against accusations she insisted were false.
It was one of the most bizarre moments in the show’s history.
The Emotional Toll
For Scheana, the experience seemed to be deeply painful.
She wasn’t just dealing with the scandal as a viewer or commentator.
She was living inside it.
On one side was Ariana—one of her closest friends, someone she had stood beside for years. On the other side was Rachel, someone she had once tried to support and encourage.
And in the middle was a legal accusation that threatened her reputation.
What made the situation even more complicated was the emotional context.
Scheana had been one of the loudest voices defending Ariana after the affair became public. Her loyalty was clear.
But the restraining order forced her into a different kind of spotlight.
Suddenly, the narrative around the scandal wasn’t just about betrayal anymore.
It was about violence.
About legal consequences.
About conflicting stories.
And the internet, as always, had opinions.
Some fans believed Rachel completely.
Others dismissed the accusation outright.
Many simply watched the drama unfold like another chapter in a show that had always thrived on chaos.
But for the people involved, this wasn’t just television anymore.
It was their real lives.
The Pressure of Loyalty
As filming for the next season began, the cast found themselves navigating a social environment that had become almost impossible to manage.
The friend group that had once shared vacations, parties, and late-night conversations was now fractured.
Lines had been drawn.
Ariana’s inner circle—particularly Katie Maloney—stood firmly by her side.
Katie’s support for Ariana was unwavering, and in many ways admirable. She had watched her friend endure public humiliation, and she had no interest in extending sympathy to the man responsible for it.
But at times, that fierce loyalty seemed to amplify the hostility surrounding Sandoval.
Scenes during the following season often felt less like conversations and more like confrontations.
And in the middle of all of it stood someone who arguably had the most uncomfortable position in the entire group.
The Schwartz Problem
For Tom Schwartz, the scandal created an emotional trap.
Schwartz had been Sandoval’s closest friend for over a decade. Their partnership wasn’t just personal—it was professional. They co-owned businesses together. They had built entire storylines around their friendship.
But Schwartz also cared about Ariana.
He had spent years socializing with her, filming with her, and watching her relationship with Sandoval from the inside.
When the affair came to light, Schwartz found himself in a position that many viewers struggled to empathize with, but that was deeply real.
He was expected to condemn his best friend publicly.
And when he didn’t do it strongly enough for some members of the group, the backlash came quickly.
Ariana herself expressed frustration with Schwartz during parts of Season 11. At times, it seemed like she viewed his attempts to remain loyal to Sandoval as a personal betrayal.
But from another perspective, Schwartz was facing a question that most people eventually encounter in their lives:
What do you do when someone you love makes a terrible mistake?
Do you abandon them?
Or do you stay?
The internet tends to prefer simple answers.
Real life rarely provides them.
The Silence After the Storm
By the time the cameras stopped rolling on the next season, the friend group looked very different from the one viewers had watched for years.
Some relationships were permanently damaged.
Others had been strained but survived.
And some—like the complicated dynamic between Scheana, Ariana, and Sandoval—remained emotionally unresolved.
The scandal had begun as a betrayal between three people.
But its aftermath revealed something deeper about the nature of friendship, loyalty, and public judgment.
When millions of strangers are watching your life unfold in real time, every decision becomes amplified.
Every mistake becomes permanent.
And every relationship becomes fragile.
Because in the world of reality television, the cameras may eventually stop rolling.
But the internet never stops watching.
Chapter Six
Brothers in Chaos
Before there was a scandal.
Before the restaurants.
Before the internet picked apart every word they said.
There were just two guys trying to make it in Los Angeles.
For more than a decade, Tom Sandoval and Tom Schwartz had one of the most recognizable friendships in reality television. It wasn’t just a partnership for the cameras. It was something deeper than that—something built through years of shared struggles, late-night conversations, business ventures, and the strange bond that forms when two people experience fame together.
They had been through everything.
Breakups.
Friendship wars.
Business failures and successes.
And perhaps most notably, they had survived the chaos that once defined Sandoval’s relationship with Jax Taylor, a feud that often threatened to tear the entire friend group apart during the early years of the show.
Through it all, Schwartz had remained the constant.
Where Sandoval could be intense, emotional, and sometimes theatrical, Schwartz was softer. More passive. Often uncomfortable with confrontation.
Their personalities balanced each other in a way that worked.
Sandoval was the engine.
Schwartz was the brakes.
But even the strongest friendships have limits.
And the scandal that became known as Scandoval pushed theirs closer to the edge than it had ever been before.
When Loyalty Becomes a Burden
When news broke that Sandoval had been carrying on a secret affair with Rachel Leviss while still in a long-term relationship with Ariana Madix, the fallout was immediate and brutal.
The public reaction was swift.
The cast reaction was even faster.
Within days, Sandoval had become one of the most widely criticized figures in reality television. The internet turned him into a villain almost overnight, dissecting his past behavior, questioning his motives, and demanding accountability.
And in the middle of that storm stood Tom Schwartz.
Schwartz wasn’t the one who cheated.
He wasn’t the one who lied.
But he was the one who had to stand next to Sandoval while the world judged him.
That’s the strange reality of loyalty.
When your best friend makes a catastrophic mistake, you don’t just watch them suffer.
You suffer alongside them.
The Business at Risk
The scandal didn’t just threaten their friendship.
It threatened their livelihood.
At the time the affair became public, the two Toms had invested enormous time, money, and personal identity into their bar, Schwartz & Sandy’s.
The restaurant had already faced delays, financial stress, and the usual challenges that come with opening a new business in Los Angeles.
Now it was facing something much worse.
Public backlash.
Fans began organizing boycotts.
Online reviews were flooded with angry messages directed at Sandoval.
Suddenly, a business that had nothing to do with the affair had become a symbol of it.
Schwartz, who had spent years trying to step out from the shadow of the show and build something real, found himself trapped inside a narrative he had no control over.
Every interview he gave turned into an interrogation about Sandoval.
Every appearance became another reminder that his partner’s personal decisions were now affecting his professional life.
It was an impossible position.
Because while Schwartz may not have agreed with what Sandoval had done, he still loved him.
That love didn’t disappear just because the internet demanded it.
The Quiet Pressure
One of the things that often gets lost in reality television discourse is how much pressure the cast faces behind the scenes.
The audience sees arguments.
They see confrontations.
They see dramatic moments that make for great television.
But they rarely see the quieter struggles that happen when the cameras stop rolling.
For Schwartz, those struggles were constant during the months following the scandal.
His friend group was divided.
His business was under attack.
And his closest friend was unraveling under the weight of public backlash.
At times, Schwartz seemed exhausted by it all.
During interviews and appearances, he often tried to strike a careful balance—acknowledging that Sandoval had done something wrong while still defending him as a human being.
That nuance, however, didn’t always land well with viewers.
In the world of internet discourse, people tend to prefer absolutes.
Villains.
Heroes.
Right.
Wrong.
Schwartz’s attempt to live somewhere in the gray area frustrated many fans.
But perhaps that gray area is where real friendship actually exists.
The Breaking Point
There were moments during the following season where it seemed like the friendship between the two Toms might not survive.
The stress of the scandal created tension that neither of them had experienced before.
Schwartz had to carry the weight of a business under siege.
Sandoval was navigating the emotional fallout of losing not just his relationship with Ariana, but much of his social standing within the group.
Their conversations became heavier.
More serious.
Less playful than viewers were used to seeing.
For years, their friendship had been built on humor, inside jokes, and a shared sense of absurdity about the chaos around them.
Now the chaos had become too real.
And for the first time in their long history, there were genuine questions about whether they could move forward together.
Why Schwartz Stayed
One of the most common criticisms directed at Schwartz during this period was simple:
Why are you still defending him?
Why not just walk away?
The answer, of course, is that friendships don’t work that way.
Especially not friendships that have lasted more than a decade.
Schwartz had seen Sandoval at his best and his worst.
He had watched him support friends, help people behind the scenes, and show loyalty in moments that never made it onto television.
He had also watched him make mistakes.
Plenty of them.
But the idea that one scandal should erase an entire history of friendship was something Schwartz seemed unwilling to accept.
To him, Sandoval wasn’t just a headline.
He was family.
And family—whether biological or chosen—is complicated.
Sometimes they disappoint you.
Sometimes they embarrass you.
Sometimes they break your heart.
But walking away entirely isn’t always as simple as the outside world thinks it should be.
Surviving the Storm
Over time, the initial intensity of the scandal began to fade.
Not disappear.
But soften.
The public conversation shifted.
New stories emerged.
New dramas replaced the old ones.
But the friendship between the two Toms endured.
Perhaps changed.
Perhaps strained.
But still intact.
And maybe that says something important about the nature of loyalty.
In a world where public opinion can change overnight, the people who stay beside you during your worst moments become even more significant.
Not because they excuse your mistakes.
But because they believe you are more than the worst thing you’ve ever done.
For Schwartz and Sandoval, the scandal tested everything about their friendship.
And somehow, against the odds, it survived.
Chapter Seven
Scheana in the Middle
When a scandal erupts in a friend group, it rarely impacts only the people at the center. Often, the collateral damage falls on those who are quietly loyal, quietly kind, quietly caught in the crossfire. For Scheana Shay, that collateral damage was enormous.
Scheana had been a consistent presence in the Vanderpump Rules world for years. She had celebrated milestones with Ariana and Sandoval, comforted Rachel in moments of heartbreak, and navigated the complex hierarchy of the cast with a mix of humor and grace. But when the Scandoval scandal became public, all of that changed. Overnight, Scheana found herself forced to choose sides, to defend friends, and to face legal and social pressures she never anticipated.
The Restraining Order and Fallout
The restraining order filed by Rachel Leviss against Scheana became one of the most sensational aspects of the aftermath. For fans, it was a shocking detail: someone outside of the direct affair suddenly embroiled in a legal battle. For Scheana, it was deeply personal.
Scheana had tried to support Ariana, her long-time friend, after the revelation of the affair. At the same time, she still had a history with Rachel—she had helped her navigate past breakups, mentored her in subtle ways, and believed in her potential. That dual loyalty became impossible to maintain when Rachel accused her of aggression. The emotional weight was crushing.
Scheana has described the time as “intense and isolating.” She faced cameras filming her every reaction while she tried to maintain a sense of composure. On top of that, online harassment and social media scrutiny made it nearly impossible to separate personal trauma from public narrative. Fans debated her intentions, her character, and her morality—when, in reality, she had spent years being quietly supportive of everyone in the group.
Between Two Worlds
Being in the middle isn’t just about making choices between people; it’s about being aware of consequences for every action. For Scheana, every word, every facial expression, every small action could be—and often was—analyzed as an allegiance or betrayal.
Her loyalty to Ariana was never in question; she stood by her friend and validated Ariana’s pain. But that loyalty unintentionally alienated Rachel, even as Scheana tried to explain herself. In a way, she was punished for trying to remain neutral, for trying to act with integrity in a situation where the internet demanded extremes: hero or villain, nothing in between.
And yet, through it all, Scheana endured. She didn’t lash out publicly, she didn’t exploit the story for attention, and she didn’t let the drama define her entirely. Her ability to navigate the emotional chaos of the scandal quietly, with dignity, was remarkable.
The Human Side of Reality
What most viewers fail to understand is that behind every headline, every Instagram story, every podcast clip, there are real people dealing with real emotions. Scheana was not just “the friend stuck in the middle.” She was a human being facing extraordinary pressure, legal scrutiny, and fractured friendships—all while being watched by millions of strangers.
She worried about her relationships with Ariana, Sandoval, and the rest of the cast. She wondered how the public perceived her and whether she would ever be able to regain the trust and camaraderie she had before the scandal. And she faced those questions while filming, recording, and maintaining a presence on a show that thrived on personal drama.
Lessons in Empathy
Scheana’s experience highlights a key aspect of the Scandoval story: not everyone affected is at the center of the scandal. Some people get caught in the emotional crossfire, forced to navigate loyalty, friendship, and morality under intense scrutiny.
For her, it was a lesson in resilience, empathy, and understanding the limits of friendship. She had to make choices quickly, balance competing interests, and maintain her own emotional health, often at great personal cost.
In many ways, Scheana’s story is the hidden thread that connects all the aftermaths of the scandal. Her friendship with Ariana helped Ariana navigate betrayal. Her understanding of Sandoval provided a stabilizing force. And her interactions with Rachel highlighted the complexity of mental health, emotional trauma, and the consequences of public exposure.
Scheana and the Larger Narrative
As the show moved into Season 11, Scheana’s role became both prominent and subtle. She was present, but often under the radar. She had influence, but it was quiet influence. She wasn’t the story—but she helped shape how the story unfolded.
Her story reminds readers that reality television, for all its spectacle, is still about humans living messy, complicated lives. Scheana endured judgment, scrutiny, and legal challenges—and came out on the other side with a reputation for grace under pressure.
In the end, Scheana Shay exemplifies the uncelebrated strength required to survive being caught in the middle of a scandal. While the cameras captured moments of confrontation, the true story lies in the quiet resilience of someone who refused to let public perception dictate her values, friendships, or personal growth.
Chapter Eight
Jax Taylor: Opportunism and Fallout
When a scandal hits, some people become victims, some become heroes, and some… become opportunists. For Jax Taylor, the Scandoval scandal was both a chance and a challenge.
Jax had a long, complicated history with Tom Sandoval. From the early seasons, their friendship was a rollercoaster of loyalty, competitiveness, and ego clashes. The infamous Season 8 feud over the pastor had already shown that Jax had a flair for drama and a tendency to escalate conflicts for his own purposes. But nothing tested the boundaries of his ambition quite like Scandoval.
Capitalizing on Chaos
Within weeks of the affair becoming public, Jax Taylor began exploring ways to leverage the situation. Alongside his then-wife, he launched a podcast that quickly became a platform to comment on the scandal. While he framed it as providing “insight,” it was also clear that the scandal offered him renewed attention, relevance, and influence.
Every slip, every apology, every social media post from Sandoval or Ariana was fodder for analysis. Jax dissected their actions, often painting Sandoval in the harshest light while subtly framing himself as a voice of reason and morality. It was a delicate performance—part commentary, part self-promotion.
Yet, underneath the opportunism, there were real consequences. Jax’s commentary didn’t just shape public perception; it impacted the cast’s internal dynamics. Old wounds reopened. Friendships were tested. Lines were blurred between accountability and exploitation.
Historical Tensions Resurface
The feud between Jax and Sandoval had deep roots. The Season 8 pastor incident was emblematic: Sandoval tried to protect a friend, Jax felt slighted, and drama ensued. Over the years, they had fought, reconciled, and fought again—but the Scandoval scandal reignited old tensions.
Jax’s podcast commentary often referenced past grievances. Some listeners interpreted it as vindictive; others saw it as entertainment. Either way, it reignited friction that many thought had been resolved.
For Sandoval, this was deeply frustrating. He wasn’t trying to defame Jax; he was trying to protect Ariana, his relationship, and the delicate balance of friendships within the group. Yet, Jax interpreted—or presented—the actions as attacks against him, which only fueled public speculation.
Brittany’s Resentment
Adding another layer to the story was Brittany Cartwright. Whether lingering resentment from past conflicts influenced her behavior is unclear, but it was evident that Jax’s commentary occasionally echoed her sentiments. Sandoval faced not just the public, but subtle reminders of past conflicts, making the personal fallout even more complex.
The network of relationships around Jax, Brittany, Sandoval, Ariana, and Scheana illustrates just how complicated these social dynamics were. One scandal had ripples that extended far beyond the immediate triangle of Tom, Ariana, and Rachel.
Public vs. Private Persona
One of the most fascinating aspects of Jax’s approach was the contrast between public persona and private behavior. On the podcast, he appeared analytical, critical, and even humorous. Behind the scenes, however, the cast knew the commentary could sting and sometimes misrepresent intentions.
It highlighted a broader theme: in reality television, the line between performing for the camera and living your life is nearly impossible to draw. Every word, every interview, every podcast episode contributes to an ongoing narrative that can redefine relationships, reputations, and public understanding.
Consequences and Reflection
Looking back, Jax’s actions during the scandal offer a cautionary tale about opportunism in the age of social media. While he may have gained attention, relevance, and engagement, he also strained friendships and fueled tension. Some fans cheered his insights; others condemned him as exploitative.
For Sandoval, Ariana, Scheana, and Schwartz, Jax’s opportunism was another challenge to navigate. It was a reminder that even within a close-knit friend group, loyalty is conditional, and public platforms amplify private tensions.
Setting the Stage for Reconciliation
Ultimately, the story of Jax Taylor during Scandoval underscores the fragility of relationships under public scrutiny. Friendships, loyalties, and alliances can fracture overnight, and opportunism can turn allies into critics.
Yet, even amidst the chaos, moments of clarity and reconciliation emerged. The friendship between Sandoval and Schwartz endured. Ariana’s resilience and professional success continued. Scheana’s quiet support remained steadfast. And even Jax, while capitalizing on drama, revealed the ways in which reality television magnifies human flaws and insecurities.
Chapter Nine
Life After the Storm: Rebuilding and Reinvention
The public fallout from Scandoval was immense. Every social media post, podcast clip, and reunion appearance was dissected. Yet even amidst the chaos, Tom Sandoval and Ariana Madix found ways to regain control over their narratives, carve out personal growth, and pursue professional opportunities that were once unimaginable.
The key to their resilience wasn’t just survival—it was transformation.
Finding Space to Heal
After the scandal, both Tom and Ariana had to navigate the challenge of distance. Tom took time away to focus on his mental health and professional reinvention. He toured with his band, seeking solace in music and the road, while Ariana focused on her career and public image with the same dedication and precision she had always brought to her work.
They needed space, but they also needed purpose. In the darkest moments, when public backlash threatened to define their identities, they discovered new avenues to channel energy, creativity, and focus. This was a lesson that would shape the next chapters of their lives.
Professional Reclamation
Opportunity came in the form of reality television projects that were separate from the network drama that had once consumed their lives. Shows like Traitors and Love Island offered fresh platforms to showcase talent, strategy, and personality in ways that felt controlled rather than reactive.
Tom embraced challenges outside his comfort zone. Touring with his band was more than a financial necessity—it was therapeutic. Performing music allowed him to process grief, public scrutiny, and personal mistakes in real time. Every show became a form of catharsis, a chance to reclaim voice and identity.
Ariana, meanwhile, leaned into her expertise and professionalism. Her brand, her business ventures, and her poise on camera became a template for success. Public perception could shift, but her dedication and growth were undeniable. By the time new seasons aired and new projects emerged, she had reclaimed her narrative with authority.
Collaborative Growth
The post-Scandoval era also highlighted the power of collaboration. Outside projects required teamwork, trust, and shared responsibility—elements that were sometimes missing during the scandal itself.
For example, working on Traitors and Love Island demanded clear communication and emotional resilience. Tom and Ariana learned to set boundaries, communicate more effectively, and navigate environments where public scrutiny was constant but controlled. These experiences strengthened their bond as friends, as collaborators, and as professionals navigating a difficult industry.
Public Redemption and Personal Lessons
The outside projects were not just career moves—they were opportunities for redemption. Sandoval’s authenticity and Ariana’s poise reminded audiences that there was more to their story than the scandal.
Public appearances, interviews, and podcasts became platforms to share nuanced perspectives. Tom’s candid reflections on his mistakes and growth, Ariana’s unwavering professionalism, and both of their commitment to emotional honesty created a narrative of accountability, resilience, and reinvention.
Fans began to see them not only as reality TV figures but as individuals capable of transformation, learning, and leadership under pressure.
Moving Beyond Scandoval
Ultimately, this chapter of their lives demonstrates a fundamental truth: even after public scandal, there is space to reclaim agency, pursue purpose, and grow as a person. Tom and Ariana didn’t simply survive—they evolved.
Projects like Traitors, Love Island, and other endeavors were milestones of resilience, markers of a journey from chaos to clarity. They became reminders that personal growth is rarely linear, that public perception doesn’t always reflect personal truth, and that redemption often requires action, not just words.
Preparing for the Future
By the end of this chapter, it’s clear that life after Scandoval is not about forgetting the past. It’s about learning from it, using it to inform choices, and building a foundation for lasting success and emotional fulfillment.
The story of Tom and Ariana is far from over. The lessons of loyalty, accountability, and resilience extend beyond reality television. They inform how one navigates friendship, love, and professional ambition—even in a world that thrives on judgment and spectacle.
Chapter Ten
Coda: Life Beyond Scandoval
Time has a way of softening the sharpest edges, though it never erases them completely. Years after the scandal that captivated social media, reality TV, and gossip columns, the lives of those involved have continued to evolve—some in ways fans might have expected, others in ways that surprised everyone.
Moving On
For Rachel Leviss, stepping away from the drama allowed her to focus on her personal healing and professional reinvention. Her work with sound bowl therapy has become a central pillar of her life, giving her purpose, peace, and a platform to guide others in wellness. Fans who followed her journey may remember the turbulence, but Rachel’s evolution shows that personal growth often comes quietly, away from cameras and headlines.
Recently, news about the sale of the house where so many pivotal moments occurred made waves. For Ariana, Tom, and the rest of the cast, it was a reminder that physical spaces hold memories—but they don’t define the people who live, work, and love within them. Life moves forward, even if the past lingers in echoes.
Ariana and Tom: Resilience Realized
Ariana Madix has continued to thrive professionally and personally. Her poise, professionalism, and dedication to her craft have cemented her as one of the most admired figures in reality television. Her ability to balance grace with assertiveness has set a standard for what it means to navigate fame, friendship, and personal growth under public scrutiny.
Tom Sandoval, too, has rebuilt in profound ways. Touring with his band, participating in outside projects like Traitors, Special Forces and House Of Villains and reflecting on his past mistakes publicly allowed him to reclaim his narrative. His growth was both emotional and professional, showing audiences that accountability paired with action can lead to meaningful redemption.
The relationship between Tom and Ariana remains one of mutual respect, trust, and support. Their ability to navigate professional opportunities, public scrutiny, and personal healing together demonstrates the resilience forged in the aftermath of scandal.
Lessons in Humanity
One of the central lessons of Scandoval is that human relationships are rarely straightforward. Missteps, misunderstandings, and mistakes are part of the narrative—but so are growth, forgiveness, and learning. The scandal exposed raw emotions, vulnerabilities, and the weight of public judgment, but it also illuminated courage, friendship, and the capacity for renewal.
Scheana Shay, Schwartz, and even figures like Jax Taylor each played a role in the larger story—sometimes complicating, sometimes supporting—but always highlighting the delicate web of interpersonal dynamics in high-stakes environments.
Finding Peace
Ultimately, the story is about finding peace after chaos. For Rachel, Ariana, Tom, and everyone impacted, peace looks different. For Rachel, it’s meditation, sound bowls, and stepping away from reality TV. For Ariana, it’s professional success and personal empowerment. For Tom, it’s music, creativity, and reflection. For the author of this book, it was discovering how pop culture could offer unexpected clarity, purpose, and a path forward when life seemed unmoored.
The house may be sold, the podcasts may evolve, and headlines will continue to circulate—but the human story remains. Growth, accountability, and resilience are timeless, and they belong to no one but those who live them.
Author Reflection
Writing this sequel has been a journey of nuance and empathy. I’ve tried to honor every perspective, every struggle, and every triumph. While public perception often paints people in broad strokes—hero, villain, victim—the reality is infinitely more complex.
Scandoval and its aftermath taught me about the power of narrative, the weight of accountability, and the unexpected ways pop culture can provide clarity in moments of personal upheaval. Losing my job on the same day the scandal broke was devastating—but in retrospect, it led me to observe, reflect, and create in ways I never could have imagined. Vanderpump Rules, despite its dramatics, gave me a sense of purpose and connection when I felt professionally and personally adrift.
As I close this chapter of writing, I hope readers see beyond the scandal itself and understand the human threads that connect mistakes, growth, and redemption. Life after Scandoval isn’t about scandal—it’s about resilience, learning, and the courage to move forward, even under the harshest public gaze.
